HIGHLIGHTS
Trace the history of Ichiro Tsuruta,
the leading contemporary bijin-ga artist.
Ichiro Tsuruta, a popular trailblazer of commercial art whose work was once used in advertisements for Noevir cosmetics, sent his own muse on a trip around the world starting with a personal exhibition in 2019. Why do the women in his paintings continue to captivate so many people? This exhibition looks back at the history of Tsuruta’s work, tracing a history that spans nearly half a century through 57 rare pieces, including his student period work as well as his sci-fi, Rinpa, Buddhist, and bijin-ga paintings.
An Extraordinary Viewing Experience That Recreates the Worldview and Motifs of Tsuruta’s Art
Moonlight is a Rinpa piece by Ichiro Tsuruta that depicts mountain scenery. In the area that recreates that piece’s view of the world, you can have an unusual viewing experience made possible only with VR, seeing Moonlight in the Moonlight-recreated area surrounded by mountains and trees. Furthermore, there are a total of nine spaces reminiscent of the motifs and places associated with Tsuruta’s paintings that together create a vast world. Each of them was created on the basis of each painting’s concept. One of these is a painting called Amakusa Shiro: Prayer, which depicts prayer inside a church. Viewers can appreciate Tsuruta’s art in a virtual space that provides a better sense of atmosphere, such as the Dancer Series, which can be viewed in an elegant Japanese restaurant decorated with the wa aesthetic.
